if your reupholstering a chair:
remove all staples on bottom of seat with staple remover, or flat head screw driver and pliers. this includes removing the piping.
remove fabric from seat, leaving only the cushion and batting on the seat.
lay down new fabric with seat flipped over on it and begin stapling your new fabric. You can use a hand held stapler with 1/2" staples, or a neumatic stapler. starting on the back of the seat, fold over just enough to staple, approximately 2". place just one staple.
lift the seat up and give the other side of fabric a slight tug, then place one staple on that side (the front).
fold the sides up and place 1 staple on each side.
now go back to the back of the seat and place 5 staples up to where it curves around the corner. do the same thing on the front of the seat. do the same thing on the sides.
to work on near the corners, pull the fabric taunt and staple.
for the corners themselves, pull taunt and create tiny pleats around the corners and staple.
on the back of the seat, you might have cut outs in the wood. just do the same thing in creating tiny pleats. flip seat over to see how much fabric is left in these areas. now you can cut out the excess fabric, being careful to not cut near the staples.
now flip the seat right side up and inspect it. make sure that the fabric is fully taunt around the entire seat and your corners are neatly finished. nows the time to make any adjustments you find.
to replace the piping, use the old piping to figure out how much new fabric you'll need. remove old fabric and replace with new fabric. you can sew these, or use fabric glue.
now attach the piping to the seat, starting on one of the corners of the back. fold the piping around the cut outs. continue attaching it around the rest of the seat.
staple the dust cover inside all the staples you've used.
this completes your new reupholstering.
if your upholstering a chair
remove seat from chair.
you'll need a piece of foam that fits the top of your seat and some batting to go over the foam. you'll also need cording to make the piping.
first cut the foam that will sit on top of wood for the seat. you can do this with an electric carving knife that will give you smooth edges. then lay the batting over this and cut to fit.
lay down the fabric, right side down and place seat with new foam and batting on top of it. now you can trim the fabric around the seat, leaving plenty of room.
begin stapling the fabric. You can use a hand held stapler with 1/2" staples, or a neumatic stapler. starting on the back of the seat, fold over just enough to staple, approximately 2". place just one staple. do the same on the four sides.
now go back to the back of the seat and place 5 staples up to where it curves around the corner. do the same thing on the front and sides of the seat.

staple the dust cover inside all the staples you've used.
this completes your new upholstering.
you can use this same method of reupholstering small pieces of furniture.
